Children and adolescents are at the core of our practice, specifically addressing behaviors disruptive to the school environment preventing meaningful engagement in the learning process. At the same time, negative behaviors at home can disrupt the family system and have a profound effect on siblings. Very often, especially in schools, children's behavior is addressed with an action/consequence system using reinforcers to promote positive behavior and consequences to lessen or extinguish negative behaviors. Though these systems have an established place in the process of behavior change, they can not be the only method we use. By addressing a child's inner life and teaching awareness of their thoughts, actions and feelings, children learn to self-monitor and change behaviors independently. At Eightfold Counseling, we combine individual counseling, family engagement, mindfulness training, school collaboration, executive functioning instruction and behavior change systems to address all behaviors, negative and positive, to promote balanced living for children and adolescents.
